Paranoid Social Club

Portland, Maine

Paranoid Social Club, a radio friendly rock band from Portland Maine is getting ready to embark on their first national tour in years. The quartet, consisting of Dave Gutter and Jon Roods on guitar and bass respectively, also are well known as members of Rustic Overtones. Joining them are drummer Craig Sala (Mid Atlantic indie rock fans will recognize him as the drummer of Planeside) and Trent Gay on guitar and vocals. The band has received international acclaim for their energetic live performances, and they enjoyed a radio hit a few years ago on the strength of the song Wasted. For many fans that was their first introduction to the band, many of whom discovered the song as a result of its inclusion on the sound track of the cult movie, Beerfest.

For this band spotlight, we’ve turned our attention to the twin cities, and soul and funk warrior, SONNYBOY, a.k.a. Sheldon Riser. What does it take to have Rolling Stone declare, “…one of the best unsigned bands to come out of Minneapolis since Prince and The Time.” SONNYBOY isn’t one to be restricted to categorization or industry labels, Sonnyboy is known as an urban misfit on the musical scene. A multi- layered artist whose talents have taken him all over the world, Sonnyboy is a musician, singer, composer, producer, and bandleader.

The Alchemystics

It would be easy to label The Alchemystics as another stereotypical reggae band, but you simply wouldn’t be doing them justice. With a feel-good sound that blends reggae, dub, soul, and hip-hop, these guys sound as diverse as they look. Formed in 2003 in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, The Alchemystics have evolved over the years into their current six-piece lineup, which includes three vocalists- an emcee and two singers.

Consider The Source

Consider the Source, an instrumental trio from New York City, is a band with a sound that is difficult to describe in words. Writers have coined phrases such as “Sci-Fi Middle Eastern Funk” and “Instrumental Sci-Fi prog-rockers”, but even those fall short of fully summing up their unique feel. Nonetheless, Consider the Source is on the rise, as their most recent release “Are You Watching Closely” has garnered them notoriety in music publications across the country. RELIX Magazine recently named them a “Band on the Verge” in their August ’09 issue.
