Renaissance Infinity Music Hall, Hartford

Renaissance

Infinity Hall, Hartford, CT

November 5, 2014

Here’s what I know about Renaissance: They are a progressive rock band, but one that is different within a whole genre of ‘different.’ They have a fantastic female singer, and they were early in the developing music scene to have a woman-fronted band. They have always been respected; I’ve never heard anyone respond as they might with other prog "monsters.” "

Golden Gate Wingmen November 5 2014

The Golden Gate Wingmen

November 5 2014 Terrapin Crossroads

San Rafael CA

Show announcement leads to plane ticket, cross country sojourn and a pilgrimage to see the birth of an all star band, the Golden Gate Wingmen. It is wholly appropriate that the first show is at the mecca of improvisational bohemian music just north of San Francisco. The wizards come out from behind their curtains to come together and showcase their talents in a project both refreshingly original and derived from the collective shared experience of the musicians and their fans.

Robin Trower at The Egg

Robin Trower

The Egg, Albany, NY

October 22, 2014

Starting with: "Somebody Calling," the 1977 funk opener from In City Dreams; then, "thank you very much, thank yooou!" the now-familiar call as heard on every one of Robin Trower’s live albums released in the last couple of decades. Time was when all we had was the 1975 LP, barely forty minutes long. Next, a couple of latter-day numbers and then, "thank you very much, thank yooou!"

Alec Hutson at Impact Hub

Alec Hutson

Impact Hub, Boston

October 17, 2014

Alec Hutson makes beautiful music. Armed at present with guitar, ukelele, saxophone, foot-cymbal and loop device plus, one supposes, a few pre-recorded rhythms and percussion patterns (for starters), he produces lovely compositions on the spot. To be sure, these are "mash-ups" (the artist's term, albeit applied differently) of improvisation and written material. Laying sax over looped guitar, then 'multi-tracking' the sax, this gets pretty elaborate.
