If there was one word that summed up Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias’ return to the Premier Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino, it was “chisme,” Gossip if you will. But good gossip. The kind exchanged between friends when somebody leans in, lowers their voice and says, “Alright, you didn’t hear this from me…” And there were plenty of people ready to listen.

Iglesias packed the Premier Theater for two sold-out shows, an early 5:30 p.m. performance followed by another packed house at 8:30 p.m. Two shows, one night, and thousands of fans coming through Foxwoods to spend some time with Fluffy.

Longtime friend and road manager Martin Moreno got things started, warming up the crowd before sending everyone off for a roughly 20-minute break that deserves its own word: Merchamission. Forget intermission. This was a merchamission; stretch your legs, hit the bathroom and, most importantly, go grab some Fluffy gear before the big man took over.

Iglesias doesn’t simply stand up there firing one-liners. That’s never really been what makes Fluffy, Fluffy. He tells stories. He wanders. He gives everybody a voice. He throws in those unmistakable sound effects, takes a detor, doubles back and somehow brings the whole damn thing home. And throughout all that chisme, he kept sprinkling in digs at that other casino down Route 2. Mohegan Sun.

There’s some history there. As Iglesias told it from the Foxwoods stage, there was a time when he wanted to perform at Mohegan and they didn’t want Fluffy. Then Fluffy got big. Really big. Selling out SoFi Stadium big. And eventually, Mohegan wanted him back. His response? “Eat a dick.” The Foxwoods crowd absolutely lost it.

Then Iglesias remembered there was a young fan named Luke in the audience. Earlier in the show, Luke had made his way up and taken a selfie with Fluffy, one of those spontaneous little interactions that suddenly makes a kid part of the show. So with Luke still sitting out there listening, Iglesias reconsidered his choice of words. “Nah. Eat a Costco hot dog.” It was game over as the Premier Theater erupted in laughter.

It was the perfect snapshot of the night: Fluffy sharing some chisme, taking a shot at Mohegan, remembering a kid he had met earlier and changing course on the fly, only to somehow make the punchline even funnier. And Iglesias wasn’t done with Luke, at the end of the show, Fluffy gave him his hat and told him to bring it to any show anytime for free admission!

A selfie earlier in the night and Fluffy’s hat to take home at the end. For Luke, what started as a night watching one of the biggest comedians in the world turned into a story he’ll probably be telling for a very long time. Those are the moments you only get at a live show. And the Mohegan material never needed to take over the night. Iglesias was smarter than that. He trickled the digs in throughout the show. You’d be following another story, completely invested in wherever Fluffy was taking you, when suddenly Mohegan would get dragged right back into the conversation and then boom, another eruption of laughter and roars from the Foxwoods crowd. Eventually, he barely needed to say the name. The audience knew where he was going, and Fluffy knew they knew. He had them eating out of his hand.

There’s something about Iglesias’ relationship with Foxwoods that made all of it work. He has history in Mashantucket, and two sold-out Premier Theater shows only added another chapter to it. This didn’t feel like another comedian making another casino stop. It felt like somebody returning to a room where he knew the audience, knew the rivalry and knew exactly how far he could push it.

Underneath all the casino rivalry and chisme, though, was the reason Gabriel Iglesias remains one of comedy’s biggest draws. The guy can tell a story. Thousands of people can be sitting around you, but Iglesias somehow makes it feel like you’re hanging around a table after dinner listening to the funniest guy in the family tell you something he probably shouldn’t be telling you.

That’s where Fluffy shines. The voices. The sound effects. The facial expressions. The pauses. And those long, winding stories where you occasionally forget where the hell you started, until Iglesias circles back and lands the punchline. At Foxwoods, the crowd followed
him everywhere.

Martin got them warmed up. The merchamission got them shopping. Fluffy brought all the chisme. Mohegan Sun took a beating. And Luke went home with a selfie, Fluffy’s hat and one hell of a story. Two sold-out shows. Two packed houses. One night of chisme. And somewhere about 10 miles down Route 2 across the river, Mohegan Sun’s ears had to be burning.

Or maybe they were just wondering why everybody suddenly wanted a Costco hot dog.

Till the next laugh…….Joel
