Night Two started and you could tell that there was more purpose and surety to the band instantly. The band once again consisted of Nathan Graham on drums, Klyph Black on bass, Waynard Scheller on keys, and John Kadlecik on guitar. Having had a night to play together and get used to this new ensemble had done the band a great service, and their playing was even more crisp, comfortable, and complementary.
The night’s song selections included a lot of interesting material, songs you wouldn’t expect, with the occasional classic thrown in to keep everyone grounded. A big highlight of set one was the premier of Klyph Black on a lead vocal for Hot Tuna’s Good Shepherd. The execution of the song was so strong that someone shouted from the audience afterward “You can keep that one on the set list!”
More surprises unfolded one after the other with John Prine’s It’s Happening to You followed by Bruce Cockburn’s Lovers in a Dangerous Time. Kadlecik found some psychedelic goodness that he brought to the song that was clearly his personal take rather than anything you’d be able to easily hear in the original. Tangled Up in Blue, the Dylan classic closed the set to power everyone into a set break with a lifted spirit.
Second set was another mix of the expected and the not so. Dusting off a song that’s over sixty years old, Joe Mephis’ Dim Lights Thick Smoke again showed Black’s influence on the band as he and Kadlecik combined on a very energetic vocal. These obscure songs were counter balanced by classics from They Love Each Other to Ripple albeit a version that like those before it within the shows recently performed by Golden Gate Wingmen, with a quicker pace and an altered rhythm. Van Morrison again is playing an inspirational role in the song selection with the classic It Stoned Me. The old Hairball Willy song (Kadlecik / Olson) It’s Alright eventually gave way to the show closer Midnight Moonlight.
An amazing show featuring a band that is already tightening up after just one night and making their song show quite memorable and worthy of the love being heaped on the band by it’s new fans.
