Infinity Music Hall & Bistro Hartford CT March 9, 2022 by JD Cohen

One of the longest running bands and a national treasure, Los Lobos will commemorate their 50th anniversary in the coming year. On a cold, snowy night Los Lobos warmed up Infinity Hall in Hartford Connecticut throwing what felt like a house party for a small group of resolute and fortunate fans. Drawing from their lengthy history and various influences, the band delivered a set that included material from their 2021 album “Native Sons”, among their most popular hits dating back to 1984, covers by Neil Young, the Grateful Dead, Little Walter, Richie Valens as well as traditional folk music of Mexico.

The band lineup has remained consistent since its inception in 1983 but on this night, Alfredo Ortiz (Beastie Boys, The Offspring, Ozomatli and Tenacious D) replaced long-time drummer Enrique “Bugs” Gonzalez who recently decided to return to Mexico amidst the charged atmosphere surrounding immigration in the United States. Singer/guitarist David Hidalgo’s son Vincent filled in on bass for founding member Conrad Lozano.

Often understated and without any of the standard rock posture, the band delivered raucous and often blistering rock, lead by David Hidalgos masterful, blues-based guitar with support from accomplished and long-time and founding members Cesar Rosas (guitar), Louie Perez (guitar) and Steve Berlin (keyboard, saxophone).

Fans had a hard time staying in their seats and by rousing three song encore (Cinnamon Girl -Not Fade Away-Bertha) people were up on their feet pressed up again and dancing in the isles.  All in all, a wonderful night of music by one of the most talented, consistent, and unpretentious musicians touring.
