On Sunday, February 25th Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and his band Doyle played to a packed room at New York’s Blackthorn 51. Opening for Doyle were several local metal bands, including Sister Munch, Splatterhouse, The Muckrakers, The Witch-Kings, Vision Serpent, Lost In Echoes. Doyle was formed by ex-Misfits guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein in 2012 and launched their As We Die Abomination tour in New Jersey just days before their stop at the Blackthorn in Queens.

The hulking Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and his band took the stage at 11:00 PM to an excited room and played a 60-minute 13 song set of furious horror punk and heavy metal. The set was split evenly between songs from their first album “Abominator” and their new release “As We Die.” “This is a love song. You can dance to it” was the introduction by the lead singer, Alex Story, for every song, singing as though his life depended on it.

Although Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein aka Paul Caiafa is the main attraction, Alex “Wolfman” Story is the real force behind the bands extraordinary live performance. Story has all the talent, energy and madness of some of the greatest rock front men, reminiscent of Black Flag era Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop and even Jim Morrison of the Doors. Covered in crude’ tattoos and with wild crazy eyes, Story leaves everything onstage and it’s no surprise that there was no encore given how much energy he exercised during the intense but short show.
Story and Doyle are definitely a case of quality over quantity. Bassist Brandon Strate and drummer Wade Murff relentlessly propel the music forward, while Doyle and Story play the crowd to perfection. Doyle knows how to use his body builder physique and Frankenstein good looks to mug for the cameras while Story howls and wails, crazy eyed and dripping in sweat. Never actually venturing into the audience but coming close, both got right in the faces of those fortunate enough to be in the front rows. Story often sang while standing on the rail, holding on to the lighting scaffolding above the stage of the small club. At times he looked like he was about to become completely unhinged and might hurl himself into the audience. Like any great rock concert, it was a thrilling performance filled with aggression, a touch of danger, and the feeling that anything could happen at any moment. The tour winds through the US before going to Birmingham, England on March 26th and then playing dates in Russia before finishing up April 9th in St. Petersburg. Caiafa will rejoin the original Misfits at the Prudential Center in New Jersey on May 19th.
