City Sports Grill in Northampton MA hosted Erena Terakubo on May 7 2019

Erana Terakubo is a bright young star on the jazz horizon. In her mid-20’s and hailing from Japan, she already has an impressive history playing alto saxophone. On May 7th, she played a powerful set with the Green Street Trio at the Spare Time Lounge in Northampton. Direct from a stint at Dizzy’s in NYC with the Kenny Barron Quartet, she opened with “I Mean You” by Thelonius Monk, followed by Freddie Hubbard’s “Up Jumped Spring.” Drummer Jon Fisher supported the ballad, “Everything Happens to Me,” with beautiful brush work before he and bassist George Kaye left Erana and pianist Paul Arslanian alone for a duet on the ballad, “If I Should Lose You.”

Fisher then smoked out a right handed snare solo on “One finger Snap” by Herbie Hancock. Terakubo closed the set with “Bird Lives” by Jackie McClean, eliciting rousing applause from the capacity audience. With recordings and live appearances at clubs and festivals all over the world, Elena Terakubo looks to be a great force in straight ahead jazz for years to come. The Green Street Trio continues it’s amazing run of hosting great jazz players on Tuesday night at the Spare time Lounge, 525 Pleasant St., Northampton. This series is now in it’s 9th year and shows no sign of slowing down. If you love improvised music of any kind, you should treat yourself to one of these Tuesday night sessions!
