Imagine Dragons brought their hit machine to the Hartford Meadows this past Tuesday and put on a great show. Opening act and America’s Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal opened the show and she showed all of the charm that won her that title. Her set was somewhat plagued with technical difficulties but she persevered and apologized her way through and the crowd was duly impressed with her raw and natural talent. Unlike on AGT she performed with a complete band backed up by drums, keys and guitar and she moved around the stage like a live concert veteran.
It had rained throughout the day, but that did not put a damper on the excitement being felt by the crowd as the time drew closer for Imagine Dragons to take the stage. The video screens continued to build the hype while the anticipation built and as the band took the stage they delivered from the opening bell with their biggest hit, Radioactive.
One song after another was a hit by the band that has staked their claim to the Top 40 chart for the last several years. In the middle of the show they broke it down with an acoustic set that saw the band come all the way in front of the stage for a performance that was nearly from within the audience. Band members switched it up with instrumentation the included fiddle, viola, and upright bass and it was a real nice turn and change to break up their set. The three songs in that format were: “Amsterdam,” “Bleeding Out,” and “I Bet My Life.”

Dan Reynolds did a great job connecting with the crowd, telling stories about the origins of the songs and the development of the band. And taking his shirt off didn’t hurt, either. Screens, confetti cannons, screaming guitar solos eclipsed only by the screams of the fans that packed out the Meadows that night. The band played song after song, from their previous record and from their current release Evolve. The show came to a climax without an encore but straight to the end in an explosive version of the band’s current hit single, Thunder. All around a great show and a total showcase of the talents of this four piece band from Las Vegas who showed that they weren’t just a radio hit band, but a great rock band capable of an amphitheatre shaking performance for the ages.
