June 5, 2025 | MGM Music Hall at Fenway, Boston, MA
It was one of those early HOT summer nights in Boston. Inside the MGM Music Hall at Fenway, we forgot about the heat with the energy that exploded into pure joy as The Head and the Heart delivered a radiant, emotionally rich, and wildly feel-good performance that turned the sold-out venue into a sea of singing voices, swaying bodies, and happy hearts.
A Perfect Build: Ashley Graves & Futurebirds Set the Stage
The evening opened with Ashley Graves, whose warm vocals and heartfelt storytelling had early arrivals quietly captivated. Her acoustic set was intimate and sincere, like a musical hug that set the tone for what would become a night of collective catharsis.

Next came the always-eccentric Futurebirds, who ramped up the tempo and filled the room with reverb-drenched Southern-psych twang. Their harmonies, matched with raucous guitar work, had the crowd clapping along and ready for the headliners. As they closed with a soaring jam, it was clear the night was only going to rise from there.
The Head and the Heart: Joy in Every Note
The moment The Head and the Heart walked onstage to the swirling opening chords of “Cats & Dogs” and “Coeur d’Alene”, the room erupted. Their harmonies were instant balm, their chemistry electric. Every voice in the crowd seemed to rise with them, and by the time they reached “All We Ever Knew”, fans were dancing, shouting lyrics, and riding a wave of pure musical joy.

The band, now over a decade into their journey, played with the confidence of veterans and the glee of kids discovering magic for the first time. Songs like “Fire Escape” and “Jubilee” brought an irresistible, foot-stomping groove, while “Don’t Show Your Weakness” and “Another Story” landed with emotional weight, prompting gentle sways and glistening eyes.
Midway through, “Ghost” and “Missed Connection” felt like fan-favorite peaks, with frontman Jonathan Russell grinning ear to ear as the audience practically took over vocals. “You sound beautiful tonight, Boston!” he shouted, and he meant it.

“Cop Car” and “Josh McBride” quieted the room in the best way—tender, lyrical, and achingly honest. But it was “Honeybee” that brought full-throttle euphoria: couples danced, friends embraced, and voices soared. It was a moment of togetherness that will live in the hearts of everyone who was there.
A Magical Closing Stretch
The final stretch of the set was a masterclass in pacing. “Rivers and Roads” was a spiritual experience—tears, arms wrapped around shoulders, and one of the loudest singalongs of the night. “People Need a Melody” felt like a mission statement, and “Gone” and “After the Setting Sun” kept the mood buoyant and hopeful.

By the time the band ripped into “Shake” and “Arrows,” the crowd was jumping, hands in the air, releasing every ounce of lingering stress into the rhythm. The main set closed with the heart-wrenching beauty of “Down in the Valley,” met with rapturous applause and stomping demands for more.
A Joyful Encore: Shared Voices, Shared Light
The encore opened with “Lost in My Mind”—and there wasn’t a silent voice in the house. It was pure communion between artist and audience, loud and life-affirming. They closed the night with “Aperture,” a track full of reflection and light, fitting for a band that gives so generously onstage.

As the final chords faded, the band stood together, hands raised, eyes wide with gratitude. “Boston, you’ve been magic,” Russell said. And truly, so had they.
Final Thought
The Head and the Heart’s show at MGM Fenway was a collective experience of joy, vulnerability, and connection. From emotional ballads to roof-raising anthems, the band reminded us of all of music’s most enduring power: to bring people together and send them home lighter than they came.
One night. One voice. One heart. Boston won’t forget it.
