Paper thin vocals, rudimental drumming, subdued guitar licks, not what one would think would make for an engaging performance. Au contraire, Nymphlord harken back to Northwest bands of the 90’s on labels like K Records and Kill Rock Stars. They were the perfect choice to warm up the crowd.

Between the bands, I had a chance to ask some of the attendees how they got turned onto Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers. The majority mentioned seeing them at the Ohana Music Festival last September. They weren’t the only ones eyeing them at the festival. Pearl Jam, who headlined the day Tean Jesus & The Jean Teasers performed, were so smitten, they took them on the road with them.

Between the bands, indie pop and rock bands were played over the PA. Suddenly the volume increased and the familiar guitar of Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger blasted through the room. The song is known for its energy, and wass the perfect foil for what was to come. Anna Ryan (vocals,) Scarlett McKahey (lead guitar,) Neve van Boxsel (drums,) and Jaida Stephenson (bass) were joined by touring rhythm guitarist, Meg Holland. All five members were as happy to be there as the audience. The audience was skewed to younger women. They all sang along to every word. On sing-along-songs like I Love You, that was a given, but the audience sang along to every song!

Anna Ryan, seems as comfortable on stage as a seasoned vet. Her lyrics are relatable to the teen and young women of the audience. Standout tracks were their new single, Balcony, Please Me (written with Los Angeles’ own Linda Lindas) and the grunge heavy Lights Out. The latter song, with Jaida’s heavy bassline and mirrored with Scarlett’s guitar, made for a perfect closing song.

Wet Leg graced the stage at the Moroccan Lounge on their first run through Los Angeles, perhaps the same trajectory is in store for Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers. As someone who was around for the birth of the Riot Grrl movement, this felt like the second wave. The world needs more of this unbridled energy.
