An Intimate Night of West Coast Folk November 21 2024 by Gary Alpert

On November 21, 2014, Boston’s Royale provided a warm and intimate backdrop for the enchanting debut of Canadian folk duo Ocie Elliott. Hailing from Canada’s west coast, the pair—Sierra Lundy and Jon Middleton—delivered an evening of heartfelt melodies and quiet introspection that resonated deeply with the attentive crowd.

Opening the night was William Prince, whose rich baritone and reflective storytelling set the tone perfectly. His soulful songs created a sense of quiet anticipation, paving the way for Ocie Elliott to take the stage.

The duo opened with “Now You Don’t,” their harmonies immediately wrapping the audience in a blanket of calm. Their acoustic simplicity highlighted the tender interplay between Lundy’s ethereal voice and Middleton’s warm tones. Songs like “Be Around” and “Like a River” captured the spirit of nature and emotional rawness that define their music.

“Wait for You” and “Free” brought a rhythmic pulse to the set, while “Fame” and “Thinking About You” demonstrated the depth of their songwriting, exploring themes of love, longing, and life’s fragility. Their rendition of “I Got You Honey” was a standout, its lighthearted warmth bringing smiles throughout the room.

The duo’s stage presence was as understated as their music, with gentle anecdotes and gratitude for their first-ever Boston performance. “This is such a special moment for us,” Middleton said, visibly moved by the warm reception.

Highlights included “Forest Floor,” where their harmonies swelled with a cinematic quality, and “Down by the Water,” a contemplative track that had the audience swaying in quiet unison. They closed with “A Place,” leaving the room in a serene, reflective hush.

Ocie Elliott’s performance was a reminder of the power of simplicity in music. With nothing more than acoustic guitars, harmonies, and heartfelt lyrics, they transformed the Royale into a haven of introspection and connection. For those in attendance, it was clear that this first visit to Boston wouldn’t be their last.
