September 26 2024 Los Angeles, CA plus special guests Been Stellar Words by Lawrence Mann and Photos by A Rood Photography

Last night, saw a packed house at the Hollywood Palladium, where the Dublin-based band Fontaines D.C. brought their raw energy and infectious sound to a fervent audience. The night kicked off with Been Stellar, a band that channels the spirit of early 2000s New York rock. Their gritty sound, a blend of shoegaze and gauzy rock, is fresh yet familiar, worthy of the buzz they’ve been generating.

As Fontaines D.C. took the stage one by one, anticipation filled the air. The low-end vibrations were palpable, shaking the floor and resonating in the chest of every concertgoer. While their four albums showcase radio-friendly melodies, live, the band transformed into a force of nature—raw, menacing, chaotic, and incredibly loud. It was a sound that echoed influences from Oasis, IDLES, and the Happy Mondays, yet remained unmistakably their own.

Fontaines D.C.’s rise in the U.S. has been meteoric, bolstered by consistent play on SiriusXM and a supporting slot on Arctic Monkeys’ recent tour. Their name has become synonymous with what’s hip in today’s music scene, and the backstory is equally intriguing. “Fontaines” pays homage to Johnny Fontane, Al Martino’s character in The Godfather, and the “D.C.” was added to distinguish themselves from an LA band of the same name—Dublin City, indeed.

The setlist had the crowd jumping, with standout tracks like “Jackie Down The Line,” “Favourite,” and the frequently played set-closer “Starburster” igniting the room. However, the highlight for many was “Here’s The Thing,” showcasing Conor Coley’s heavy, Nirvana-esque guitar lines that pierced through the chaos of the night.

For their encore, the atmosphere shifted beautifully as Grian Chatten’s stunning vocals took center stage on quieter numbers like “In The Modern World” and “I Love You.” It’s a testament to the band’s artistry that the majority of the audience remained until the house lights came on, a rarity in today’s concert culture.

Outside the venue, the familiar scent of bacon-wrapped hot dogs wafted through the air as fans buzzed about their favorite moments from the show. If this performance is any indication, expect even bigger things from Fontaines D.C. in the near future.
