Like fellow New Yorkers, Interpol, The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and even dating back to the Ramones, Sunflower Bean have sun-shiny songs buried under a metropolitan grittiness. The band, composed of bass player and singer, Julia Cumming, guitarist and backing vocalist, Nick Kivlen, and drummer, Olive Faber, came out with New York attitude. From the first song, Champagne Taste, Julia walked to the lip of the stage to stand in front of gentleman filming the band on his phone. She got so close, he had to backup. She wasn’t disrespecting him, she did it because it was funny, yet her face remained stoic.

As those already initiated to the bands sound, it is the perfect mix of dreamy pop, goth, psychedelia, alternative rock and a din of noise, but Julia’s vocals are so bright and powerful, they rise above this din. We were treated to sixty-five minutes of bliss. Julia is the perfect front person. Her beauty, fashion sense, confidence and especially voice, are so commanding, you can’t take your eyes off off her. Julia and Nick, now call Los Angeles home, I hope that means I get to see more of them. If they come to your town, go see them!
