Adam Ant made a triumphant return to New York Wednesday night at Webster Hall, after having to postpone his original January show due to the unexpected death of his guitarist and musical director, Tom Edwards. Ant played to an extremely packed and sold out house. The official capacity of Weber Hall is 1,500, but based on this reviewer’s unscientific metrics, there had to be a few hundred more Ant fans in attendance, some dressed in Adam Ant’s signature gothic pirate garb.
Adam Ant and his band really shook the hall, playing the entire album Kings of the Wild Frontier, including the song “Feed Me To The Lions,” which has never been performed on tour. Kings features dual drum kits smashing the Burundi Beat style of Central Africa making the 35-year-old album appear new.

In addition to Adam Ant the five-piece band consisted of William Crewdson- Lead Guitar, Joe Holweger- Bass guitar, Andy Woodard- Drums and Jola on the second set of Drums. This was the last show on the month-long tour that played 17 cities across North America.

Once the entire album was finished, the show became more freewheeling with much of 1980s hit’s being played. These included “Stand and Deliver,” “Vive Le Rock,” and “Desperate But Not Serious” sans horns. The horns were missed, but taken as a reinterpretation of the song, “Desperate” still sounded great. Ant came to play, as about the only words spoken to the audience was “Hello New York,” besides telling a story about his father with Adam at the wheel of a car before performing Cartrouble.
At 62 years of age, Adam Ant still sounds as good as he did 30 plus years ago. He was jumping all over the stage and the songs still seemed fresh for him as well as the audience. One of the highlights was at the end of “Stand and Deliver.” Ant enticed the audience do a sing-a-long to the chorus. The house lights turned on and many iPhones came out to capture the moment.
From the YouTube channel of user Shaun Fowler:
Rounding out the show for the three-song encore was “Red Scab,” “Get It On (Bang a Gong),” the T-Rex classic, and “Physical.” All longtime fan favorites. The very tight band played for just under two hours, playing 26 songs.
