The Phish from Vermont perform at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville Indiana on June 05 2022. Words by Jason Berenstein and Photos by Jordan Eisman

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is a grandiose cover attempt for most bands, but Phish came out of the gate with it on this final night of this Spring Tour, alerting anyone not paying attention that this band came to PLAY.

In true form, they crushed it again, with some truly epic soloing. Phish have been playing this George Harrison song since the mid 1990s, and it still shines. After a fine “My Soul” and a few classics (along with one of Trey’s well-crafted quarantine songs, “Evolve”) we were treated to a very special “Guyute.” The first “Limb by Limb” to be played since last year at this very venue came next.  “Mercury “and an uber-funky “Moma Dance” brought this set to a rousing finish.

A vicious “Sand began the second set that evening; Mike Gordon’s bass and Jon Fishman’s constantly impressive drumming held this one deep in the pocket as they set off into uncharted territory than was light yet dark, evil yetbeautiful. The band turned the entire venue into one glorious gigantic dance hall. After a pause, a dangerously powerful “Sigma Oasis” eventually dropped back hard into “Sand” to put the finale on this 45-minute powerhouse segue.

“I Can Hold My Breath for a Minute or So”

“Twenty Years Later” and a delightful “Mango Song” had their moments before we were all reminded to “Rise & Come Together.” An immense and thunderous “Free” brought this final set to its conclusion in grand fashion.

As the acapella mics were set up for the encore, we patiently waited for the inevitable “Grind,” and then Phish gave us a delicious chaser in the form of an utterly phenomenal “Slave to the Traffic Light” to end this three-night run of pure joy that is Phish at Deer Creek.
