The Phish from Vermont Ruoff Music Center Noblesville Indiana June 03 2022 Words by Jason Berenstein Photos by Jordan Eisman

“Theme From the Bottom,” not played since Shoreline Amphitheatre last summer, was a perfect opener for the closing run of Phish’s 2022 Spring Tour at Deer Creek. It was fierce, flawless, and followed by a bouncy “Boogie On Reggae Woman” that included an instrumental “Happy Birthday” to Mike Gordon by Trey Anastasio that had everyone in the venue hollering for more. Next up was the quintessential feel-good hit of any tour, “Everything’s Right,” which led into a deep groove jam that had some serious teeth.

“Esther” and “Buried Alive” were both well executed back-to-back classics with a jaunty “Alaska” up on deck. “Mull” was fairly straightforward until Trey took it into the stratosphere while Page McConnell added samples and the band locked in, turning this Mike tune into a major vehicle. “Birds of a Feather” and “Cavern” wrapped up this first of six sets to be played at the Creek in fine form; the crowd enjoyed themselves to the absolute fullest.

The second set started out strong with the always solid jam during “No Men in No Man’s Land,” which ultimately dropped into a stellar and soaring, yet heavy, “Down With Disease” that segued into “Joy” as a lovely breather. Phish then kicked off a four song heavy-hitter closer with a raging “Ruby Waves” into a beautiful rendition of “The Lizards, “Fluffhead,” and a gritty “Chalkdust Torture” all performed with remarkable accuracy.

Mike Gordon’s 57th Birthday show concluded with a notably crowd pleasing double encore of the eternally playful “Contact” and an absolutely wild First Tube.
