The Who
The Who

I’ve been a fan of the Who since I was 13 years old.  I saw them for the first time in 2001 at Germain Ampitheatre in Columbus, and it was a great experience.  I skipped the show they did a few years ago because I thought they were too old and washed up to put on a good show.  I was wrong.  The Who 50 year anniversary tour showcased a band that has stayed strong and in viral.  They put on a fantastic performance.  I went by myself and had a nice time.
I bought my ticket a half hour before showtime and got a great deal.  I had no idea they would put on a show with that much energy.  Zack Starkey, Ringo’s son, plays drums with lots of enthusiasm.  Roger Daltrey’s voice was still intact and hit all the notes.  Pete Townshend played great guitar and told awesome anecdotes about Keith Moon and his girlfrends.
“One time Keith and I were at a fireworks store somewhere and he saw some superglue.  His eyes got really wide and the next morning all the furniture was superglued to the ceiling of the hotel room,” said Pete.  “I had a girlfriend once who lived in Ohio.  Yes, she was young and she lived in Columbus.  So I am familiar with your city.”  Also, “I had a girlfriend in the ’60s who wore a dress she made that was very revealing.  One day a guy from another band walked up to her and said, ‘Your nipple is showing'”  Pete threw some really funny anecdotes in there.

Townshend was in great shape- his electric guitar and voice are both sharp as ever.  This was evidenced by a great version of Eminence Front with his Fender really ringing clear as a bell.  He broke out the acoustic guitar for I’m the One and it provided a cool change in the band sound.

For a band that has been doing this for 50 years, the Who still have it.  Roger hit all the notes for “Love Reign Over Me,” and “Baba O’reilly.”  I could almost picture him at Woodstock or the Tommy movie with his long locks and fit frame.  His hair is a little shorter now, but he is still in great shape.  There is still plenty of time to catch a show on “The Who Hit’s 50” tour, as they continue through the West Coast, Canada, then Midwest and East through December 2015.  I give them two thumbs up.
