Rock N Roll Resort

Returns with “v4: The Dream Machine”

Hudson Valley Resort

Kerhonkson, NY April 4-6 2014

We got to the resort around noon on Friday and checked in; people were getting set up and the circus was just commencing. At about 5:30 or so our first taste of music started with Asheville North Carolina Band The Broadcast taking the stage at the Empire Lounge. That room is right off of the main ballroom and is set up with a nightclub vibe. The band is a ballsy funk outfit with drums, percussion, bass, guitar and a female vocalist.

Byrds Tribute

McGuinn and Hillman

Byrds’ Tribute, Sweetheart of the Rodeo

Makeout Room

San Francisco, CA March 23rd, 2014

Perfect albums are rare. The Byrds’ Sweetheart Of The Rodeo is a perfect album. It was a tall order for McGuinn and Hillman to retrace the entire history of American Folk & Country music in a 43 minute span, even with the help of southern born Harvard theology dropout Gram Parsons in tow. There are some shortfalls and a few missed opportunities along the way but the more time you spend with it the more you realize you wouldn’t change a note. It’s a complicated perfection.

Allman Brothers Band

Allman Brothers Band

The Beacon Theatre

New York, NY

It had been some fifteen years since I had seen the Allman Brothers Band. That show was at the pier in Seattle WA, and featured a new young kid named Derek Trucks on guitar, alongside one of my all time favorites, Dicky Betts. A lot of water has passed under the Brothers’ bridge since then and I was anxious to catch one of the legendary shows that the Brothers were to put on at the historic Beacon Theatre.

Paul Simon and Sting

Paul Simon and Sting

Boston Garden

Boston, MA March 3, 2014

I had seen each of these two amazing artists before: Sting three times opening for the Dead in Vegas in 1994, once with the Police and Elvis Costello a few summers ago at SPAC, so this would be my fifth time seeing him perform. I was lucky enough to catch Paul Simon twice on the Born at the Right Time tour in support of Rhythm of the Saints, once with Bob Dylan in Portland, OR back around 1998, and this show. I knew that we were in for a huge treat when the lights went down on the Boston Garden (I just can’t call it TD BankNorth, sorry).

GGG Sarah Borges

Swinging Steaks, Sarah Borges, Girls Guns and Glory

The Sinclair

Cambridge, MA February 7, 2014

The royalty of Boston’s vibrant Americana scene gathered at the newest castle of live music in the Hub of the Universe, the Sinclair, on February 2, 2014. With two of the bands releasing brand new albums, the night was sure to be a barn burner.

Gaslight Tinkers

The Gaslight Tinkers

The Parlor Room

Northampton, MA January 31 2014

I had been hearing about the Gaslight Tinkers for over a year, as my buddy Garrett Sawyer told me about them. Garrett is the former bass player for the Alchemystics and has been a bit of a musical adventurer with me, having shuttled me down to South America for the Carifesta in Suriname last summer. So I’m always interested in his ideas and musical journeys. The Gaslight Tinkers is a new project out of Northampton, MA, and the Parlor Room was the perfect place to see them.

Tricksters 2014

January 22, 2014

Brooklyn Bowl

Brooklyn, NY January 22, 2014

The Zen Tricksters just completed their annual reunion show at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York. Our friend Wayne Scheller who plays in the Grateful Dead tribute the Jam Stampede, along with some of the musicians there that night, was in attendance and gave us a full report. Wayne is also putting together his own Dead tribute called Rainbow Full of Sound and will be touring throughout the MidAtlantic in the coming months including doing a residency at Garcia’s on WED nights in May, recreating the Dead’s historic Radio City Music Hall run, each show done week after week.

Phish NYE 13 into14

January 15, 2014

Madison Square Garden

Ny, NY December 31, 2013

As tenured Phans are concerned, I was a late bloomer onto Phish lot. I graduated high school in 1999, spending most of it listening to classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, and The Allman Brothers Band. I came to find out that a lot of my friends were really into Phish and although I thought I had some idea of what they were up to, it took me until my first year at Plymouth State College (NH) in 2000 for me to really get hooked. Of course by then, Phish had started their first hiatus and I’d have to wait more than two years to see them live….

The Van Burens

The Van Burens

Keene, NH January 3, 2014

For the longest time Keene NH did not have a reliable small venue in which to see small bands. Sure I had seen Blues Traveler at the Colonial theater downtown, but considering that Keene is a college town, it’s long overdue for a decent music bar. So it was with great excitement that I heard that the old Railroad Tavern had been converted into a dual use club, Scores. In the front room, anything that a sports fan could want with TV screens everywhere playing live sports. In the back, a great room for live music.

Middle East Downstairs

Cambridge, MA December 13, 2013

A few months ago, back in Spring, I was talking to Jon Braun. He’s the mastermind behind the Talking Heads tribute band Start Making Sense, who lovingly recreate the music of Talking Heads. We were talking about what other band might make sense to recreate, discussing what makes a great tribute band: a wide variety of hits that everyone knows, a band that doesn’t really tour anymore so it’s not possible to see them regularly, and a musical complexity that begs for interpretation and requires superior musicianship to execute. We talked about NIrvana: too personal. The normal options were floated but considered too common- your Beatles, Stones, Grateful Dead, Phish. Jon’s idea was brilliant but perhaps not universal enough, the Beastie Boys instrumental era- Paul’s Boutique cuts and such. But that won’t play in Peoria. Jon called me back in early summer and said that rehearsals had begun for HmfO. I was amazed at the brilliance, Hall and Oates!
