Get ready, Boston. Athens, Georgia’s favorite psych-country troubadours, Futurebirds, are bringing their expansive blend of cosmic country-rock, indie psychedelia, and deeply rooted Southern storytelling to Arts at the Armory in Cambridge on Thursday, June 11.
The show comes at a massive turning point for the band, arriving just days after the June 5 release of their highly anticipated and wildly ambitious first-ever double LP, Far Out Country (via Dualtone Records).
The Big Buzz: A Physical-First Masterpiece
Far Out Country is already being hailed as a major artistic milestone for the group, earning high praise from tastemakers like Brooklyn Vegan, Relix, and Stereogum—the latter aptly noting that the album’s name is “both a title and a mission statement.”
What makes this release even more special is its unique, rollout format. Futurebirds are rewarding crate-diggers with a physical-first release. The full 18-track double album will initially only be available on vinyl, with the second half of the record held back from streaming platforms until months later.
Three Voices, One Cosmic Sound
At the core of Futurebirds’ longevity and brilliant chemistry is their multi-frontman attack. The band thrives on the distinct songwriting voices of Daniel “Womz” Womack, Carter King, and Thomas “Tojo” Johnson working in a constant, harmonic conversation with one another.
Across the new double album, the trio—backed by the formidable rhythm section of Brannen Miles (bass) and Tom Myers (drums)—tackles heavy, resonant themes of family, fatherhood, aging, and the perpetual, exhausting tension between life on the road and life back home.
“This record is us trying to take an honest look at ourselves, and where we’ve been.”
— Carter King (Vocals/Guitar)
To capture this evolution, the band enlisted GRAMMY-winning producer Brad Cook (famed for his work with Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman). They split the recording process between loose, fiery, live-to-tape sessions at Sonic Ranch in Texas and meticulous studio experimentation elsewhere.
If the advance tracks are any indication, the new material is going to sound massive live. Fans got an early taste of the record’s rich textures and emotional honesty via the Sienna Life EP tracks—“Sienna Life,” “Sleepless in the Cage,” and “Ghost Moon.” Meanwhile, the latest single, “Fly On” (complemented by a dreamy, transportive music video involving an antique store detour gone beautifully off course), perfectly captures the reflective, widescreen spirit of the band’s current chapter.
But don’t let the introspective studio tracks fool you: Futurebirds remain a absolute powerhouse on stage. Rolling Stonepreviously heralded them as “one of the most fascinating and captivating rock acts touring today.”
When they hit the stage, Boston fans can expect a dynamic, high-energy setlist that seamlessly balances long-time fan favorites with the sweeping, electrifying new material of Far Out Country. It’s a rare chance to catch a band at the peak of their powers, armed with their most ambitious songs yet.
