Fruition Blends Old Favorites and New Album How to Make Mistakes in Powerful DC Performance

Portland’s Fruition lit up Union Stage at The Wharf on September 18, 2024. Man, what a night! These folks know how to put on a show. The five-piece band couldn’t have been happier to be back in DC. Kellen Asebroek was all smiles when he talked about it. “DC has always treated us really nice,” he said. “People here just get our music.”
Jay Cobb Anderson was equally stoked about the venue. “We love Union Stage,” he grinned. “Great spot, great sound, and they treat us well.” The band’s been at it since the early 2010s, building their sound and following. On stage, you’ve got Jay Cobb Anderson shredding on electric guitar and vocals, Kellen Asebroek working magic on piano and acoustic guitar, Jeff Leonard holding it down on bass, Mimi Naja rocking the mandolin and electric guitar, and Tyler Thompson keeping the beat on drums.

Fruition just dropped a new album called “How to Make Mistakes.” Anderson couldn’t hide his enthusiasm: “We’re on the road longer than usual this time. It’s awesome playing all this new music for people.” The energy was electric as they kicked things off with “Santa Fe.” The setlist was a perfect mix – they played foot-stompers like “Wild as the Night” and ballads too. Songs like “Blue Light” and “Take It Back” had the crowd swaying and singing along. By the time they hit the encore with “Sweet Hereafter” and “Whole World,” everyone was all in.
For Asebroek, playing in DC is different. “It’s wild being where all these big decisions get made,” he said. But that’s what makes it special. Here, in the heart of the nation, Fruition brought their honest, feel-good music to people who needed it. As he put it, “It always feels good to bring some honesty and positivity and be able to rock out and cry and feel feelings with like-minded folks.”
Live music has magic. It brings people together and makes them feel something real. That’s exactly what Fruition did at Union Stage. The band’s still on tour, carrying their tunes and good vibes across the country.
