The Troubadour in Los Angeles welcomed Creature Canyon on July 28 2022. By Harriet Kaplan Photos by John Snedden
The San Diego-based alternative indie rock Creature Canyon won the audience over and converted them into new fans with an energetic, inspiring and melodic set of original music. Their show was punctuated brightly by soulful tones and choruses the crowd was able to adeptly sing along with the band. At The Troubadour, recently opening for the headliner Cayucas, Creature Canyon made a significant impact with their brief but strong set lasting roughly forty minutes.
The talented five-piece unit featuring the charismatic and very personable Austin Steele on vocals and guitars, Ryan Amyot (guitar), Josh Frontiero (drums), Aaron Lund (bass) and Luc Fralic on keyboards and percussion were a tight and versatile ensemble locking together in sync. They were very polished and sophisticated players. Yet had the flexibility and dexterity to cut loose and play more spontaneously. Creature Canyon has created a very recognizable yet distinctive sound that is radio friendly and festival ready.
The vibe of the arrangements had a quiet intensity on the mid tempo numbers balanced by more vibrant and kinetic style with material on the more up-tempo songs. Most of the numbers featured are from the band’s forthcoming debut album “Remarks” set for release on September 2nd.
The ten-song set focused on universal, relatable themes such love and loss and coming out the other end of that journey with more personal self-awareness. Some of the set high points included “Take What You Want,” “Sleepwalking,” “Hot Streak,” “Brooklyn” and a rousing cover of The Killers’ “All of These Things.”
Austin Steele is the consummate front-man working the stage at The Troubadour as if he was playing a large venue or arena with dramatic and big gestures interacting with the crowd, jumping onto the stage floor and mingling with them and leaping unto the speakers shaking a tambourine above his head. Creature Canyon packed a lot into their set musically and with a scintillating performance fans won’t soon forget. They are setting in motion a template for a burgeoning career with greater things to come with the necessary building blocks at its foundation, with more exciting music for years to come.
About Creature Canyon’s upcoming release:
Accompanied with a cinematic music video, San Diego-based alternative rock outfit Creature Canyon delivers “Sleepwalking,” today. The newest track marks the final single ahead of their debut full-length album, Remarks — slated for release on Friday, September 2 via Gnu Roam/Kartel Music Group. “‘Sleepwalking’ brings to light the different perspectives of someone in a wavering relationship on the brink of collapse. The anxiety of feeling trapped and over analyzing the disconnects in the relationship has led to an uncertainty of what’s to come and a longing for resolve,” explains the band.
Drawing inspiration from Fargo, Breaking Bad, and Collateral, the music video for “Sleepwalking” takes the viewer on a cinematic adventure. Shot across the harsh California desert by director Colin Shephard, it features rising actors Arsi Nami and Ganna Bubnova, as two characters struggling with the possession of a stolen item.
The full length album Remarks is set for release on September 2. Remarks is produced by Private Island frontman Christian Lum, engineered by Mike Schuppan (Foster The People, Young The Giant, Wolf Alice), mixed by Jordon Silva (Vance Joy, The Avett Brothers), and mastered by Brian Lucey (Cage The Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys).
