Starting in 1976 Charles played with his brothers Aaron, Cyril and Art to form the Neville Brothers.  His saxophone contributions lent gravitas to the band’s signature sound, and they were one of the most influential bands to come out of New Orleans.  They won a Grammy for the song Healing Chant that featured Charles’ playing prominently. He has been living in western MA for years with his wife Kristin Neville.   He was seventy nine years old. In recent years he has been performing with a wide variety of bands including the Last Waltz Live, Workingman’s Jazz Band, Gent Treadly, Harvey Diamond Quartet, Circus Mind, and many others. Tor Krauter of the Last Waltz Live performed with Charles many times,  “I knew he was sick, and everyone in the music community mourns his passing.  He will be missed.” From the video channel of Austin City Limits https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvMDrUBe8tY Like so many others I was introduced to the Neville Brothers when they opened for the Grateful Dead on New Year’s Eve 1987 at the Oakland Colliseum.  Center stage, right between Weir and Garcia was Charles Neville playing the cowbell.  Their performance of Aiko Aiko is legendary.
