Erin Harpe and the Delta Swingers are poised to kick off a whole slew of tour dates in the Northeast and beyond in support of their sophomore album Big Road. The record, released this past October, has been received with critical acclaim. The first tour date was at AMP Powered by Strathmore in N. Bethesda, MD on Friday April 6th. The four-piece consists of frontwoman Erin Harpe on guitar and kazoo, her husband Jim Countryman on bass, Matt Charles on harmonica, and Devin Vaillancourt on drums. The band has been around since 2010. Erin Harpe grew up outside Washington, DC and learned her chops by playing the blues with her father Neil- and other blues greats such as Archie Edwards, John Jackson, and Eleanor Ellis. Now settled in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, the band travels frequently and came up with most of Big Road‘s material on their cross-country tour last July.

Expanding on their 2014 debut Love Whip Blues, Big Road is chock-full of the blues and soul you’d expect- but there’s also a little funk and reggae thrown in there as well to mix it up and keep things fresh. Erin’s voice melds well with Matt’s mouth harp-honkin’ while Devin and Jim hold down the rhythm section in a unit that can only be described as tight-knit.  Recently, the band released their first music video from the album, the titular “Big Road.” Says Erin, “The slide-guitar-fueled song evokes the feeling of the road, with real video footage from our tours over the last year or so, filmed by Jim Countryman. There’s also some live concert footage by H Nat Stevens and John Doherty, and a cameo by our dog/mascot Edgar, of course!” Watch it below:
