New York-based indie rockers Scarlet Sails shook the Gramercy Theatre to its very foundation Friday night during their largest headlining show to date. This kick-ass quartet features Moscow-born singer, songwriter and pianist Olya Viglione, guitarist Mark Christopher, bassist Dave Lowenthal, and drummer Brian Viglione. Scarlet Sails were electric; the crowd was hooked from the very first song: a Motown tinged, dream-like track, “Precious Times.” Fans could be seen singing and dancing along throughout the set of theatrical, power-packed sublime blend of pop and rock. Dave’s funky bass grooves held the rhythm strong.

The set then varied from the brilliant opening track of their debut album, “As I Am” to the noir-influenced “Boy, You’re Wrong.” Olya truly is the Captain of her ship as she exudes the perfect combination of charisma and confidence. Her unique voice was seductive and magnetic. Backing her up on drums was her husband Brian (of The Dresden Dolls), whose primal beats were executed with precision, and whose percussive passion broke quite a few drumsticks. As the set progressed, the band debuted two new killer songs, “Hideaway” and “Upside-Down,” which were received with much enthusiasm and applause.
The band’s cover of Radiohead’s “Climbing Up The Walls” sent spine-tingling chills through the house with Olya’s vocals and guest vocals of Kelsey Warren (Blak Emoji) in addition to Mark’s out of this world guitar licks. Then, the band kicked into high gear with the catchy anthem of non-conformity, “Spell My Name,” from their current album, Future From The Past. Olya, tambourine in hand, made the stage her personal dance floor, in which she moved with the zeal and spirit of a young child, with the fierce devotion of a seasoned professional.
The set closed with “I’ll Be There,” a ballad from their self-titled EP, a beautiful song about finding the light in the darkness. Scarlet Sails present a brand of progressive, genre-bending, and awe-inspiring rock that will leave you not only believing in Olya’s drive to stay true to herself, and her journey to go after her dreams, but your own as well.
