From the video channel of Laura Klein:
I’ve been looking forward to this opportunity for a long time – 28 years, in fact. When i first moved to Los Angeles in 1989, the first tv show I worked on was a short-lived sitcom called Chicken Soup starring Jackie Mason, Lynn Redgrave, and a very talented little girl named Alisan Porter. You may remember her from the James Belushi comedy, Curly Sue, or in Parenthood as Steve Martin’s daughter. Fast forward to the present, and you most recently saw her as the winner of the 10th season of The Voice on NBC.
On Sunday, December 10th, Alisan Porter and friends performed to a packed house and thoroughly entertained the fans at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood. I was very fortunate to be one of the guests and documented the evening. Wow! Can she sing and has an amazing vocal range. Ms. Porter opened with “River” from The Voice Season 10 live album, and followed up with ‘Stay or Run’ from her second album, Who We Are. The audience was treated to most of her songs from her time on The Voice, and a wonderful medley of songs including Roy Orbison’s ‘Blue Bayou,’ ‘Stay With me Baby,’ and ‘Cryin.’ Highlights of the evening were her new hits, ‘Deep Water’ and ‘I Come in Pieces’ released earlier this year.
Throughout the evening, Alisan spoke about her past experiences and read a few funny Youtube comments she has gotten from ‘fans’ and ‘others.’
The evening was billed as Alisan Porter ‘and Friends.’ We were treated in between Alisan’s performances with her talented friends and fellow performers from the TV show who all got to share the stage and do what they do best. Her ‘friends’ included Shoshana Bean who performed “Blue Heart” with Alisan and then sang Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” solo. Michael Sanchez (from Season 11) performed Hoagy Carmichael’s “Georgia on my Mind,” Mary Sarah sang “How Great Thou Art,” and Alisan sang with Tony Award Nominee Sam Harris on “I Forgive You.”
During the show, Alisan reminded the audience that a portion of the proceeds from the evening’s show will be donated to the Los Angeles Youth Network which she is closely involved. For more information on that worthy cause, please visit: www.LAYN.org.
After the show, Alisan had a ‘meet and greet’ session, and when everyone got their time and photo with her, I was able to re-introduce myself after all these years and shared a few photos on my ipad of her from the set of the tv show. She and her mother got a kick out of them!
Alisan will be performing regularly in Las Vegas in 2018 so be sure to check out her show!
