The Cabin Fever headlined at the CIA on Thursday night (no, not that CIA). I’m referring to the California Institute of Abnormal Arts venue in North Hollywood, CA. This intimate and quirky space has Chinese motifs, 45 record jukeboxes, skeletons in coffins and other odd ephemera that permeate the club and lends itself well as the setting for Sean Moriarty’s breathy, almost whisper-like vocals.
The band kicked things off with Agoraphobic, a track from their previous album and then moved into songs from their upcoming release, Exercise the Demon, (expected in Feb. 2018). The songs, B-L-S-H, Simon Says, Trucrime and the album’s title track, Exercise the Demon all have that eerie and captivating groove that kind of sucks you into the music and lyrics. If you listen closely, you can pick up occasional hints of War on Drugs’ guitar stylings by lead guitarist Joel Bedolla.
ABOUT THE CABIN FEVER:
The Cabin Fever evolved from singe-cell into consciousness in East Los Angeles during the spring of 2016 amidst personal turmoil, bad feelings and worse habits. They exist to distract from the inevitable end. They exorcise with each note. They don’t fit in and they never win. You are an outsider but you are not alone. They are here with you and they offer you these simple songs for complicated people.
The Cabin Fever released their first single, “Agoraphobic” in Summer 2016. The song was written about fear and difficulties Moriarty felt once he stopped isolating and started trying. The track is from the band’s debut EP, “Enjoy Yourself”, which are mostly bedroom demos begun in solitude, but finished in the warmth of real inter-humanoid interactions with J. Bedolla, Tripp beam and additional engineering by Bill Mims.
