As the sun went down on a beautiful sunny late August day giving way to a brisk evening, Peter Prince & Moon Boot Lover took the stage at Jah Fest in Ravena, just outside of Albany, New York.  Backed by longtime drummer Reed “Deep Pocket” Diefenbach and new crew member Mike Gruen on bass, guitarist-vocalist and frontman Peter Prince started the set with a reggae-tinged

“Alien Vacation” a nod to their hosts – Dr. Jah & The Love Prophets – and the 27th edition of the festival.  Some speculation that the band may play more or the whole set in this fashion was quickly squashed as the trio tore into the hard hitting funk of “Gettin’ Busy” and proceeded to deliver a set of their brand of Rocket Soul, a fusion of funk, rock and soul.

Several songs like “Blood Under Cover”, “Stop Drop And Burn/Sister Train” and “NYC” just to name a few, featured longer instrumental improvisational sections.  Sticking to a setlist of mainly older Moon Boot Lover favorites and some newer Peter Prince solo material, the band offered only one cover during the set, a version of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Stone Free,” which included a Peter Prince guitar solo screaming over Diefenbach and Gruen’s hard driving groove.  Their ninety minute set came to a close with the old favorite “Wendy,” as the crowd in attendance had just witnessed one of Moon Boot Lover’s most jammiest and psychedelic-flavored sets!  Judging by the reaction from the crowd, here’s hoping the band continues to delve into the improvisational side of their music.
