I’m going to start this review by giving myself a pat on the back for not paying much mind to the naysayers out there who didn’t think this particular combo would ever work well together. I heard the same bs when Trey filled that impossible spot on the Persian rug.

I enjoyed the shows in California, but this one was even better. I suspected that once John Meyer started working with this band, Bob & the boys would have him leave his ego behind. And I was right. This dude tore it up about 90% of the time, playing amazingly Jerryesque scales ever so fluently, especially on Bertha, Sugaree, & Shakedown in particular. I saw no egos parading on that stage, just 6 musicians pouring their hearts into some of the greatest songs of the 20th century.

Meyer was stellar! You could tell how his soulful playing livened up this band. I was way up high in the “most famous arena in the world”, but the sound was good, & they had giant screens that would often zoom in on their faces. (Ain’t technology grand?) The looks by Bobby & Kreutzman were priceless. Bobby’s voice was vibrant & powerful once more. Billy switched beats on a dime to keep pace with the uptempo Meyer/Weir/Burbridge strings.

Encore: Ripple

11/01/2015 Scarlet Begonias MSG

Mickey’s beats were magic again & of course we got a dose of “the beam” to enlighten & refresh our senses so we could properly enjoy the rest of the set.  Second set ended with a sweet GDTRFBad and a beautiful Ripple encore. This was a really awesome show I will cherish right alongside my favorites from summer tour ’89.

These songs haven’t sounded so sweet since Brent passed, if you ask me. Opinions, man, I got em. Oriel Burbridge, the Egyptian, was magical as always on his six string bass. Solid bass rhythms. He always brings a certain joy & light to any band he plays with. Who else could possibly Phil in besides Les Claypool?

Jeff Chimenti is to Bob Weir what Brent was to Jerry. A beautiful combination, all the way! They have got really good chemistry, which should only improve as this tour rolls on down the track. I may have cried just a bit when nobody was looking.

My 23 year old daughter Melissa was with me along with some of the friends I toured with in ’89- 95. She loved it every bit as much as I did way back when. Jerry may not have been present, nor Brent, and Phil was playing just up the road (God bless him) but the gifts they left us are eternal. You just gotta poke around.

If I had a car to sell, I’d sell it and do the whole tour. But I’ve got two kids in college, so..  I’m lucky enough to see a 2nd show in Worcester next week! I’m psyched, to say the least.

Set One: Samson& Delilah, New Minglewood Blues, Bertha, Sugaree, Friend of the Devil, Crazy Fingers, Uncle John’s band (beautiful version)

Set Two: Scarlet Begonias, Fire on the Mountain, Shakedown Street, Dark Star, Drums/Space (Meyer even nailed the space!), Wharf Rat, Playin in the Band, Goin Down the Road Feeling Bad.

E: Ripple
