Video Games. Outer Space. Progressive Rock. Psychedelic. What a computer would hear if it were able to take drugs? TAUK’s music is so hard to describe that I’m just saying words that it makes me think of and hopefully you can imagine it all mixed together. I remember seeing instrumental New York rockers, TAUK, open up for a band in 2013 and in their 45 minute opening set made more of an impact on me than the headliner. Flash forward 2 years and 2 full albums later and here is HEADROOM, a double album of 16 live instrumental songs recorded throughout recent tours.

The album is full of complex musical twists and turns and their genre-bending sound walks a steady line between Rock N Roll and Electronic. Their constantly-evolving vocal-less music really allow your mind to be carried away and told a story.

Mokuba is a perfect song to start the album because it’s a 7 minute preview of their music and what’s to come. The spacey synthesizer perfectly blends with the Gibson ES to propel the song into several different arrangements. Some of the compositions like Sweet Revenge, In the Basement of the Alamo, and Collateral remind me of soundtracks to bad ass video games while songs like Afro-Tonic, Rainwalk, Districts, and The Spot are more R&B and funk influenced.

The highlights of the album for me are Dirty Mouth, The Chemist, Friction, and the longest song on the album, Tumbler (13:41). These are the songs that I feel best represent the group and bring out the most raw energy when they play them live.

In addition to the 14 original songs on the album are 2 interesting covers. At the end of disc 1 is a keyboard/synthesizer-laden version of Nirvana’s, In Bloom, and at the end of disc 2 is a cover of Battle Without Honor or Humanity by Tomoyasu Hotei fr1-TAUK-Peach-Festival-2013-Shutter-Starr-Photographyom the Kill Bill movie and soundtrack (https://youtu.be/6fQuEqwQ2I4) featuring The Shady Horns (Lettuce, Soulive).

This is an excellent release by the band. The crystal clear recording and perfect mix capture the energy, intensity and sharp musicianship that make TAUK an incredible live band. Clocking in at just under 2 hours this album is a great value to the fans as well. One disc would have been satisfying enough but two makes buying it a no-brainer. Make sure to go see them live but this album will hold you over in the meantime.

The members of TAUK are: Matt Jalbert (Guitar) Charlie Dolan (Bass) Alric “A.C.” Carter (Keyboards/Organ) Isaac Teel (Drums)
