Sometimes, it’s about luck. I was wandering around Saturday afternoon and there was a gap in the schedule and I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I hit the Comedy tent to see what was going on there, but it was full. Suffice it to say that I’ve sneaked into harder places in my life, and found my way into the theater and got a seat right next to the sound board.
I had heard Vanessa Bayer doing an amazing imitation of Rachel Green / Jennifer Anniston, but missed her part of the show. Judd Apatow was telling a funny story about a speech he was supposed to give at a Mel Brooks party. He segued into talking about his mentor who recently passed, the great Garry Shandling. He talked of going to his house after Shandling’s death and finding lots of notes and papers with jokes and material. He said he got together with a friend and they worked on a song for Garry to include some of this material.
He then introduced Eddie Vedder, and the place went nuts. Vedder was at Bonnaroo ready to headline that night with Pearl Jam, and he exchanged a joke or two with Appatow and then sat down to premier this song, with Apatow joining him.
